Despite its simplicity, the polo shirt is one of the most versatile garments for a man. Although it is considered to be a summer garment, polo shirts can also be layered underneath sweaters and jackets in the winter. Every fashion conscious man has a polo shirt in his closet; if not a few polos in various fits and colors.
Although the shirt’s conception was for sporting purposes; nowadays, the polo can be styled in any way you like for casual or business occasions. Of course, the nice short sleeves and the airy fabrics of the polo make them the perfect shirts for sports like golf, tennis, or actual polo matches, or it can be the perfect cover up on the beach or worn for a nice summer garden party. The timeless elegance and the easy style of polo shirts make them indispensable fashion garments for any man.
Polo Shirts: timless sporty elegance for men
The Origins of the Polo
Many assume that the polo shirt was first invented by René Lacoste in the “roaring twenties”, however historians traced back the origins of the shirt to mid-1800s in Manipur, India. English soldiers first discovered this style of shirts while watching an Indian polo game where the players wore an earlier version of the polo shirt as we know it today. The earlier version was long-sleeved and made out of thick cotton with broad collars, but that style soon changed after experiencing heat and discomfort, for which the players added buttons to the collar to hold in place and open it easily. When English soldiers returned home in 1862, they introduced this new game of polo and the shirt to Britain.
An Inspiration for Many
After this new shirt style was introduced to the western world, all the well-known fashion houses and fashion influencers at the time wanted to claim the style to themselves. And to this day, all their influences defined the polo shirt as we know it today.
One of the many changes that the original style was altered, is the addition of an embroidered logo or emblem on the chest and the use of lighter materials. These changes are contributed to the famous Argentinian Polo player; Lewis Lacey, in the 1920s when he began to wear a lighter polo shirt with a logo of a man on a horse playing polo attached to the chest.
René Lacoste & the US Open
Tennis also had its influence on the design of the shirt when René Lacoste; a player at the US Open in 1926, decided to put his own twist on the shirt by using a new and innovative technique at that time; Pique weaving. The innovative weave allows the fabric of the shirt to be lighter and more breezy which is perfect for sports. Keeping the athlete’s comfort in mind, Lacoste removed the buttons so that the shirt can be easily slipped over the head, shortened the sleeves, and made the back longer than the front, so that the shirt can be tucked in the pants easily and allow for better movement. And lastly, René brilliantly added the iconic crocodile logo which makes Lacoste unforgettable to this day.
Ralph Lauren Reintroduces the Polo
Of course, any mention of polo shirts is not complete without acknowledging the important role Ralph Lauren played in the history of the garment. In the early 1970s, Ralph Lauren was starting his fashion brand and took interest in making polos available to all people from all social classes, not just exclusively to the wealthy and elite. From then on, Polo Ralph Lauren has become a name synonymous with the stylish shirt.
